Laura MacLucas spent her formative years in England. Under the tutelage of her father, she soon became intrigued by the sport. Her thirst for nature and adventure soon took her to far flung places where in her spare time she could pursue her fishing obsession. Whether catching bass in England, blue marlin in La Gomera, or trout on the fly up a mountain in Kenya, Laura soon realized fishing was becoming too big a part of her life to ignore.
She quit her career in horses and embarked on a trip of a life time to the Pacific Islands of Vanuatu as a deckhand on a private sport fishing boat. In Vanuatu she met her partner Capt. Russ Housby and they now run Nambas Fishing Charters together and she has never looked back.
“It’s the biggest thrill for me to take my wraps and try and read the fish to get a healthy release and a happy angler,” she says. “I am lucky to have such a good teacher in Russ. There have been too many times in the past when my hands have taken some punishment. It’s very important for me to have the best gloves to help protect my hands when dealing with these big fish, so I can keep working every day doing what I love.”
“The jigging in Vanuatu is insane — the odds are stacked against you, because these dogtooth tunas pull like a train! You’ve got to stop their run and it often leads to blisters and burns. You need a lot of determination, a little insanity and some very tough gloves help!”
